Saint John Bosco

Innately Benevolence

This large oil canvas portrays Saint John Bosco in a dynamic and multidimensional manner. A Cubist painting depicting Saint John Bosco covering a child in need with his coat, the fragmented and multifaceted scene reflects the complex emotions created by an altruistic act of kindness. His protective gesture, central to the composition, conveys compassion that provides comforting warmth and protection. With overlapping geometric shapes and angles that are characteristic of Leopold Clouvel, the painting represents hope and trust.

An adherent of the French Cubist school, Clouvel depicts the boy in fragmented forms, making him seem small and vulnerable. As he discovers the security and solace of Saint John Bosco’s sheltering coat, his face reflects feelings of gratitude, relief, and trust. The Cubist style with its fragmentation conveys the vibrant energy and bustling atmosphere of the environment that surrounds the boy. Clouvel emphasizes concept instead of visual representation.

With timeless themes of compassion and altruism, the oil painting encourages viewers to experience the warmth of a touching scene. The large Cubist canvas offers an invitation to contemplate the significance of empathy and kindness in the face of adversity.
