In French National Leopold Clouvel’s modern oil portrait of the renowned Joan of Arc, her look of determination and her clear-eyed vision of the task before her creates a striking image. Without relying on the traditional symbols associated with the Maid of Orleans, the avant-garde artist represents her aura in geometric shapes and multifaceted planes.
His bold use of strong tones reflects her strength and his admiration as he subtly incorporates the red, white, and blue of the tricolor French flag. His extraordinary skill and God-given talent have created works chosen by discerning collectors since the 1980s.
Influenced by the work of the Constructivist artists Vladimir Tatlin and Alexander Rodchenko, Clouvel taught himself to paint fragmented forms to create multiple perspectives. Without any formal art education, he purposely creates the appearance of a flattened space that gives his large oil of Joan of Arc a uniquely interpretive effect. He avoids the traditional perspective that presents subjects in three-dimensional depth and prefers interlocking shapes and planes that feature concept instead of life-like representation.
Devoting his enigmatic and unconventional life to mastering every painting style and technique with all known materials, Clouvel has achieved creative command of the expressive industrial style art form.
